Alanis Morissette was born on June, 1st, 1974 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Her father Alan Morissette, a French-Canadian, working as a school director wished to find for her daughter a female variant of his own name not existing in the nature. Having once seen in Greek newspaper the name Alanis he understood that found what had been searching for. Alanis has two brothers: the elder Chad and her twin-brother Wade who is now an instructor in yoga. At the age of seven Alanis started making music learnt playing the piano, later took lessons of ballet and modern dance. Since nine she composed songs and at ten she passed a casting to children’s teleshow “You Can’t Do That оn Television” and became a constant participant of this teleprogram. At 11 Alanis Morissette debuted as a singer, having recorded on her first earned money her own song “Fate Stay With Me”. She got a nomination of Juno Award, the Canadian analogue of Grammy for her first composition.
At the age of 14 Alanis signed a contract with company MCA Canada – first only for the publication of her records and in two years signed a high-grade contract for cooperation. In 1991 the girl moved to Toronto where she recorded her full-format debut album Alanis. This collection of pop focused dancing tracks and ballads was sold in Canada with the circulation of more than 100.000 copies. However other countries and continents didn’t show any interest to the young talent. In 1992 Morissette prepared a second long-play Now Is the Time. The disk reminded her debut album. As well as its predecessor it felt confident on the Canadian market though its circulation was twice modest. In search of new possibilities for self-realization Alanis Morissette moved to Los Angeles. To begin with she acted in a television movie “Just One of the Girls». At the beginning of 1994 she got acquainted with Glen Ballard who worked with Michael Jackson, Wilson Phillips and David Hasselhoff. Glen Ballard was not only the producer of records but also a co-author of music and in studio he played the parties of several instruments. In Los Angeles Alanis rented a tiny one-room flat in a very unsafe area and once on the way home from supermarket she was plundered being threatened with a pistol. One robber rummaged in her bag while the other forced her to lay down with her face to asphalt and put a pistol to her head. Later Alanis admitted that at that moment she could think only of a writing-book with her own texts which was in her bag. Fortunately robbers didn’t touch the writing-book and those texts made a basis for the majority of songs from the album Jagged Little Pill. In spring 1995 Alanis Morissette signed contract with label Maverick Records and the same summer there was an American debut of the singer and the composer “Jagged Little Pill”. Due to the explosive single “You Oughta Know” which was very much rotated on radio and MTV the album became a musical bomb in the summer of 1995. In June, 2004 Morissette declared about her engagement with the Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds. Then she gave an interview to the British newspaper “The Mirror» in which she told about her short homosexual experience and about relations with a man who was 30 years older than her when she was only 14 and also about her experience with drugs. However in February, 2007 Morissette and Reynolds decided to leave each other having cancelled the engagement.
