Russell Crowe was born on April 7, 1964 Wellington, New Zealand. When Crowe was 4 the family moved to Sydney. At the age of 5 he appeared in one of episodes of the Australian teleserial “Spyforce” the producer of which was his mother’s godfather. When Russell was 14 the family returned to New Zealand. The main source of their income was a cheap restaurant “Flying Jug” the co-owner of which they were. Crowe gave up school to have the possibility to help the family financially. In the mid-eighties he was a participant of music band “Russ Le Roc” the name of which repeated his scenic pseudonym. Later Crowe organized a completely new rock group “Roman Antix” which now exists as the rock group “30 Odd Foot Of Grunts” with all the participants.
At the age of 21 he went to Australia intending to enter the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. However later he gave up this idea. Later Crowe recollected that he was advised not to waste time. Having played in several serials in 1990 Crowe received his first role in the cinema in the film “The Crossing”. In 1992 there appeared “Romper Stomper” for the role in which Crowe was awarded a national film award. Since then Crowe received invitations from Hollywood directors — “The Quick and the Dead”, “Virtuosity”, “L.A. Confidential”. Crowe got two nominations for “Oscar” for the role of mathematician John Nash in “”A Beautiful Mind” and for his role in “The Insider”. In 2000 he received an “Oscar” for the role of commander Maximus in a historical film “Gladiator”. Russell Crowe is a Rugby fan. He is a co-owner of Rugby club “South Sidney Rabbitohs” which is one of the oldest clubs in Australia.
